Ghana: “HOME – Ghana, Costa d’Avorio, Sierra Leone: a Network for welcoming and educating vulnerable minors”

Country: Ghana; city of Accra

Intervention area:

Institutional donors: Commission for International Adoptions

Amici dei Bambini is part of the network of organizations which, starting from July 2021, thanks to funding from the Commission for International Adoptions, has launched the multi-country intervention called “HOME – Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone: a Network for the welcoming and educating vulnerable minors” aimed at strengthening the well-being of minors in West Africa. The three cornerstones of the project are the prevention of abandonment, the improvement of the quality of the care system and the development of educational courses.

Ai.Bi. coordinates the activities of the project in Ghana and, together with VIS – Volunteers for Development and Child Protection Center (Salesians of Don Bosco), aims to develop greater solidity and awareness of educational, parental and material resources, on the part of families and institutions.

In particular, among the beneficiaries of the project in Ghana are children, families and social workers of the OSU Children’s Home institute in Accra and of the Child Protection Center – Don Bosco in Ashaiman as well as officials of the Social Welfare department.

The intervention aims to work on the resources already available, enhancing them, and to create new ones where there are institutional and regulatory gaps. A structural lack of resources makes it even more difficult to manage extremely problematic situations. Therefore, by intervening on the technical and educational resources of all the actors involved, as well as on the material resources, the aim is to obtain a strong impact on the lives of girls and boys who otherwise would not have other possibilities, thus trying to allow them a life in the family of origin, or alternatively in a foster or adoptive family and, where this is not feasible, provide them with an institutional environment that is as suitable as possible for their needs.
